This will not be a review, since I consider myself to be in no way qualified to critique art. I can, however, provide commentary and my perspective on those who do find themselves opinionated enough to do so. So let us begin.
Last night I indulged myself in going to the cinema-gram for a viewing of Watchmen. I have to start by saying that I have not yet read the graphic novel and that I found the movie to be absolutely stunning. Immediately, there will be people stroking their imaginary, prepubescent jowl tresses and sneering at me. They will wonder how on Earth I can possess a valid opinion on the movie without having read the source material. I say to those people that it is my view that the two must be viewed as seperate works. Essentially, they are both different interpretations of the same source material. After all, how many of us would read the script of a film or play before going to watch it and then make a negative comment if either slightly deviated from it?
I do not view the movie as an attempt to transfer the graphic novel onto the screen. It is simply a cinematographic realisation of the same idea.
With that said, I was pleasantly surprised at how many metaphorical layers of meaning the story holds. It was a much more satisfying watch than the majority of Hollywood “super-hero” movies. I don’t even think I would classify it as a super-hero movie. It’s a social commentary disguised as such.
It contains a plethora of scientific references that will keep physicists and chemists foaming at their respective mouths, as well as a host of philosophical issues that kept me thinking for the rest of the evening.
Besides, the sex scene was hot.
All in all, if you haven’t yet seen it, go now! And you certainly owe it to yourself to see Dr Manhattan’s gigantic, blue… Death ray.
